Education program

Let's Clear the Air is a community education resource to increase our understanding of air pollution where we live.

The social research series Who Cares about the Environment? found air quality to be the third most important environmental issue for people living in NSW in 2007 (after water and climate change). The research is conducted by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW.

The research shows that the proportion of people concerned about air quality has been consistently dropping since 1997. This coincides with improvements made in air quality as a result of tighter controls on industry and technological advances in cars and fuels since the 1980s.

There are still more than 20 days each year where national standards for air pollution are exceeded in Sydney and other areas of NSW. As our population grows, there will be more people using cars more often which could make air quality a much larger problem in the future.

There are many things we can do to improve our air quality. Let's Clear the Air gets us to think differently about the way we travel, what we buy and how we heat, clean and renovate our homes. Most importantly, it shows how we can all reduce air pollution and benefit from cleaner air now and in the future.

Overview

Sydney, Wollongong and the Hunter are likely to have air quality concerns. The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW) encourages councils in these areas work with their communities. Councils play a critical role in air pollution, as they provide footpaths and cycleways, maintain parks and corridors, and help remove barriers to sustainable transport. They also enforce pollution laws.

An Air Education Resource Kit and workshops for educators are available.

This website has detailed information on air and links to where you can go to find out more.
