Local councils and shires play a critical role in improving air quality by providing footpaths and cycleways, and maintaining parks and corridors, to help encourage the use of more sustainable forms of transport. They also enforce pollution laws relating to local business and domestic emissions.

There are key measures currently in place to improve air quality on a national level:

• The Air NEPM (National Environment Protection Measure on Ambient Air Quality) sets national standards for levels of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide, lead and particles.
• Fuel Quality Standards Act 2000 sets national standards for petrol, diesel, biodiesel and LPG. A further standard makes sure consumers are informed about ethanol blended fuel.
• The Clean Air Research Program supports research in Australia’s most critical air quality issues.
