In 1998, the NSW Government released Action for Air, its 25-year air quality management plan for the NSW Greater Metropolitan Region.

Local Government action

Local councils and shires play a critical role in improving air quality by providing footpaths and cycleways, and maintaining parks and corridors, to help encourage the use of more sustainable forms of transport. They also enforce pollution laws relating to local business and domestic emissions.
