Improving air quality at a local council or government level


Role of local government in air education

Local councils and shires play a critical role in improving air quality by providing footpaths and cycleways, and maintaining parks and corridors, to help encourage the use of more sustainable forms of transport. They also enforce pollution laws relating to local business and domestic emissions.

The Let's Clear the Air awareness and information program was developed by the Office of Environment and Heritage to assist councils to increase community understanding of air quality at a local level.

Initiatives and resources to support local councils include:

These initiatives are part of the Clean Air Healthy, Communities program coordinated by the Office of Environment and Heritage and funded with a budget of $5 million over three years by the NSW Environmental Trust.

Support for local air education projects

The Office of Environment and Heritage provided $272,000 in funding for eleven local councils to run education projects that encouraged people to take action and improve local air quality.

The local projects, funded under the Let's Clear the Air initiative, ran across the Greater Metropolitan Region and regional NSW.
