In 1998, the NSW Government released Action for Air, its 25-year air quality management plan for the NSW Greater Metropolitan Region which covers Sydney, the Lower Hunter and Illawarra, and focuses on the two pollutants of most concern: photochemical smog (ground-level ozone) and particle pollution.

It includes a range of measures for addressing air quality, including increased controls on industry and commerce and households, and strategies for cleaner transport

A public Clean Air Forum, held on Action for Air every three years, encourages public input on air quality trends and strategies.

  • achieve 20% renewable energy by 2020
  • increase recycling to meet the 2014 NSW waste recycling targets.

The Cleaner NSW Government Fleet program is run by the Department of Services, Technology and Administration.

The program aims to:

  • encourage and report on the use of smaller, cleaner and less polluting vehicles
  • reduce running costs and greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent.

Free bike valet parking

The Office of Environment and Heritage is sponsoring a patrolled valet bike parking site at the Domain to encourage people to ride to the Sydney Festival's Festival First Night, Summer Sounds in the Domain and Symphony in the Domain.

The NSW office of Environment and Heritage and the Botanic Gardens Trust, together with the Sydney Festival and BIKESydney, is providing free parking for about 250 bikes for each of these quintessential Sydney summertime events.

The bike parking area provides a secure spot for festival goers to leave their bikes while they enjoy the show. The bike parking site is located near the intersection of Hospital Rd and Central Ave in the Domain (directly behind the stage), and is available from 1.00 pm to midnight on 7 January, 14 January and 21 January 2012. more.
