Cleaner industry

All industrial premises are regulated by State, Territory and Local Governments

Legislation requires occupiers take all practicable means to prevent or minimise air pollution.

All industrial premises are either regulated by State, Territory or Local Government. NSW has the toughest limits for industry in Australia, having strengthened its anti-pollution laws to provide:

  • stringent regulations targeting industry
  • polluter-pays provisions
  • tough penalties and powers to dissuade illegal polluters.

The particle emissions saved by these regulations alone is equivalent to taking 100,000 diesel trucks off the roads.

A system for licensing major industry has been established through the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (POEO Act). The Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation requires occupiers take all practicable means to prevent or minimise air pollution. It sets:

  • limits for emission levels
  • standards to be met when replacing or modifying old equipment
  • load-based licensing regulations to reduce pollution below required levels, as well as additional licence fees for major emitters based on pollution load.

The POEO (Clean Air) Regulation 2010 sets assessment criteria for more than 80 air toxics, new industrial facilities and significant modifications to existing facilities.

Cleaner commercial premises

Service stations are being fitted with new Vapour Recovery equipment.

The Government is working in partnership with businesses such as printers and dry cleaners to reduce their air pollution emissions.

Service stations are being fitted with new Vapour Recovery equipment to reduce VOC emissions in the greater metropolitan area. This will reduce VOC emissions by about 17 per cent, or more than 2,500 tonnes, during summer.

The Local Government Air Quality Toolkit has been developed to help local councils manage commercial emissions from business.

The Sustainability Advantage program, operated by the Office of Environment and Heritage, is designed to help businesses improve their environmental performance - which also improves their bottom line. The program helps businesses measure their carbon footprint and manage their emissions.

Find out how you can help clear the air around your workplace.
