Air Education Support

The Air Education Support program built community understanding of air pollution and its impacts. It sought to motivate different sections of the community to help clear the air by:

  • providing information on behaviours that helped reduce smog, particle pollution and greenhouse gases
  • connecting air quality to individual actions such as travel and purchase behaviours, heating and cleaning choices.

The program comprised:

The program used the latest social research to provide a suitable knowledge base for program design. This included qualitative research on people’s views and actions on air pollution.

Findings from the Office of Environment and Heritage social rearch Who Cares about the Environment 2009? and Who Cares about Water and Climate Change 2007? also informed the program design. It brought together valuable information and free resources for councils and agencies to use and adapt.

Frequently asked questions

Who was the Air Education Support program for?

The program was for the NSW community, including the general public, educators and businesses.

What was it about?

The Air Education Support program’s role was to increase community understanding of air pollution and its impacts and provide information about what we can do to improve air quality in NSW. It promoted walking, cycling, enviro driving and taking public transport as simple actions we can do to improve air quality as well as actions for indoor air quality at home and work.

It was developed in response to the fact that our air quality may decrease as our population grows, days get hotter due to climate change, and more people and cars travel more kilometres on the roads.

How did it work?

The program involved targeted communication resources and education to build community understanding of air pollution and support for initiatives to improve air quality.

Workshops were held for local councils to discuss the latest social research, new education resources and opportunities for funding to run local education activity using the program resources.

Councils could apply for limited funding to run local education demonstration projects to encourage people to improve air quality.
