On Your Bike
On Your Bike was about increasing cycling in NSW.
Riding a bicycle is an easy, healthy and cheap way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving local air quality. The On Your Bike program helped make it easier and safer for more people to get on their bike.
On Your Bike worked with people and organisations that can make a difference in improving and promoting the bike-friendliness of our workplaces, schools and communities. It:
- consulted and partnered with experts in cycling initiatives
- supported initiatives that reduced car dependency and increased the use of bicycles for travel
- helped employers and Government decision-makers play an active role in making cycling an easier, safer and more convenient form of transport.
The On Your Bike project was finalised in June 2010, around the time of the release of the NSW Bike Plan.
NSW Bike Plan
The NSW Bike Plan is a comprehensive plan to transform cycling and encourage people to ride more often and more safely in NSW.
It is the largest program of bicycle construction projects and encouragement actions ever prepared for NSW.
Cycling is an increasingly popular and important mode of travel, with more people in NSW discovering the fun, freedom and flexibility of riding their bike.
The NSW BikePlan is a whole-of-government initiative overseen by the Premier’s Council of Active Living. It describes the actions planned to build on the popularity of cycling so that our State becomes one of the world's great places to ride a bike.
It details a 10 year plan for new bicycle infrastructure to be funded by the NSW Government commitment of $158 million to improve cycling networks in NSW in the Metropolitan Transport Plan: Connecting the City of Cities. It also describes a comprehensive range of encouragement actions including cycling skills and awareness training, and more access to information for cyclists.
The NSW BikePlan can be found here.
As a high-priority NSW BikePlan action, Bicycleinfo was launched in early 2011 as a user-friendly and comprehensive source of all NSW Government cycling information.
Bicycleinfo has been developed by the Roads & Traffic Authority of NSW (RTA) in collaboration with other government agencies and major cycling community organisations, including Bicycle NSW and Cycling NSW. The website is a great tool for anyone who wants to give cycling a go for the first time and also caters for regular and experienced cyclists.
Bicycleinfo continues to grow with more information on cycling for different stakeholders, including planning professionals, businesses and schools interested in being part of creating cycling-friendly communities.
