Sustainable Mobility Initiatives

Around a third of the car trips made in Sydney are less than 3 km

Sustainable Mobility Initiatives for Local Environments (SMILE) is a program for local council planners and urban communities who are looking to promote more sustainable transport alternatives to cars in their local area.

Around a third of the car trips made in Sydney are less than 3 km and more than half are less than 5 km. These short trips cause local congestion and can seriously affect local air quality. They also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

SMILE is looking at the best ways to influence people to choose more sustainable forms of transport over cars for short trips.

The program can ultimately involve the whole community by providing access to more sustainable modes of transport.

The SMILE website looks at ways this can be achieved, including:

  • A demonstration site to showcase simple and effective practices which have been effective in improving sustainable mobility.
  • A local experiences database featuring good practices that can be replicated. Councils within the NSW Greater Metropolitan Region can contribute their experiences through a SMILE local experiences questionnaire.
  • An online Sustainable Mobility Register featuring a predictive tool which identifies initiatives best suited to a particular transport user group and infrastructure system.
  • A conference in 2010 communicating the results of the project and showcasing innovative sustainable mobility initiatives.

The program is about sustainable transport in urban areas, so any council in the NSW Greater Metropolitan Region can get involved. Participating councils can:

  • Share their experiences and know-how on sustainable urban mobility policies and initiatives, and participate in conferences, events and site visits.
  • Get in-depth information about sustainable urban mobility policies and initiatives via SMILE publications, guidelines and its website.
  • See the effects of sustainable mobility initiatives first hand through the SMILE demonstration site.

The program can ultimately involve the whole community by providing access to more sustainable modes of transport.

SMILE is running from February 2008. Research into what motivates the travel choices of specific groups of people was completed in November 2008.

The research identifed an area spanning the City of Randwick as best suited to showcase sustainable transport inititaves due to the range of transport consumers. The demonstration site is being delivered in partnership with Randwick City Council.

How does it work?

SMILE is looking at the best ways to influence people to choose more sustainable forms of transport over cars for short trips in their local areas. It aims to do this by understanding the key factors that influence people’s decision to select a particular mode of transport.

Different sustainable mobility initiatives are being trialled with different groups of transport users in a given area.

Initiatives which have been successful in improving urban mobility through public and active transport options will be showcased on a SMILE demonstration site. The demonstration site is being delivered in partnership with Randwick City Council.

An online Sustainable Mobility Register features case studies and helps councils identify the best approach for their particular area.

A Local Experiences Database gives councils practical advice about how to implement particular initiatives through relevant case studies and encourages councils to contribute through a local experiences questionnaire online.

How can I get involved?

Councils in the Sydney Greater Metropolitan area can complete the SMILE local experiences questionnaire online.

The results of the questionnaires will be made available to the public. Some will be converted into SMILE case studies of good practice in sustainable urban mobility. The questionnaire also allows councils to express interest in participating in SMILE.
